Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her grandmother as a single child. Scott went to her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls as well as Temple University after graduating. In between two job opportunities and studying secondary education, she continued her studies. She hoped to become an high school English teacher. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student the possibility of becoming a high-school English teacher fell through. The path she took to her career started with a performance artist who spoke words who performed her work in live poetry readings. Then she teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. The singer was at the Roots performance. Then she secured collaborations for instance, with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
